UB & NFTA

Apr 16

Beginning in the Fall of next year (2006), UB and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) will be working together to offer discounted access to the Metro bus and rail systems.

Under the program, students would only pay $50 an academic year for unlimited access to the Metro bus and rail systems, which could save students up to $544 annually.

There’s an open forum in 330 Student Union Monday from 3-4 pm discussing this addition.

Cartoon Controversy Moves on Campus

Feb 18

Opinions vary on campus about the publishing of cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Mohammed.

The controversy recently spread to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

“This has gotten crazy,” said Gorton [publisher of The Daily Illini], who decided to run six of the 12 cartoons even though he said he found them “bigoted and insensitive,” according to the Times. Gorton said he received calls for his resignation, but quite a bit of praise as well, including comments of support from students as he walked on campus. “We did this to raise a healthy dialogue about an important issue that is in the news and so that people would learn more about Islam. Now, I’m basically fired.”

Nobody seems to know what position to take on the issue. What do you think?

Fourth Straight Loss

Feb 09

“With four straight losses, three of them to conference-leading teams, the Bulls are setting themselves up for a difficult postseason filled with many road games.”

I hate to sound pessimistic here, but I don’t think being on the road for the postseason should be the biggest concern for the UB Basketball team. Perhaps some basketball lessons are in order?

Student Association Scandal

Feb 06

“The case of alleged bribery against Student Association Treasurer Mazin Kased was officially handed over to the Student-wide Judiciary on Wednesday, as an SA committee chose to defer the decision.”

It happened so long ago, most students don’t even remember the details (if they even knew about the scandal in the first place). Way to strike while the iron’s hot!

PJ Bottoms closed

Jan 18

PJ Bottoms and Molly’s Pub, two local bars notorious for underage drinking, were shut down over winter break after a Dec. 15 raid that resulted in charges against 20 minors and three bartenders.

Most students don’t seem to be too worried about it, although it seems that other locations may grow a little more crowded as a result.

15 Percent Work Under Influence of Alcohol

Jan 15

Workplace alcohol use and impairment directly affects an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. workforce, or 19.2 million workers, according to a recent study conducted at the University at Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) and reported in the current issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol.

Surprising numbers to say the least. Now, where do I sign up to test the “impact of employee alcohol use on productivity and safety”?
